March 28th, 2019

maxxi - elisabetta catalano

The Roman museum MAXXI will host from April 3 to December 22, 2019, an exhibition about the Italian photographer Elisabetta Catalano.

Catalano started to work as an autodidact getting to collaborate with important magazines like Vogue, L’Epsresso, Il Mondo and l’Almanacco letterario Bompiani, but her real debut was as a photographer on the set of 8½ directed by Federico Fellini.

The exhibition, by the name “Elisabetta Catalano. Between image and performance” investigates the relationship between photography and performance, showing portraits of street artists intent on their show, including Joseph Beuys, Fabio Mauri, Vettor Pisani, Cesare Tacchi.

In collaboration with Catalano Archive, the exhibition proposes all the documents which tell the complexity of the creative process of the photographer: slides, photos, photo color, correspondences and artists’ castings.

For more info about the exhibition, check out the official website of MAXXI.

CONTATTO SENTIRE LA PITTURA CON LE MANI. CARAVAGGIO, RAFFAELLO, CORREGGIO IN UN’ESPERIENZA TATTILE (CONTATTO – FEELING PAINTINGS WITH OUR HANDS. CARAVAGGIO, RAFFAELLO AND CORREGGIO IN A TOUCHABLE EXPERIENCE)

August 30th, 2017

You can touch art. Actually, you’ve got to. That’s the whole meaning of the “Contatto. Feeling paintings with your hands” exhibit. Four painted masterpieces are presented in relief form in order to allow the public to discover a two-dimensional work through a touchable experience as opposed to a visual one. This exhibit is not exclusively for the visually impaired however. Everyone is invited to experience this touchable option as a process to become gradually more familiar with a given work of art, the shapes used to create it and the tales ...

ANTOINE JEAN-BAPTISTE THOMAS E IL POPOLO DI ROMA (1817-1818) (AND THE PEOPLE OF ROME)

April 19th, 2016

Museo di Roma preserves loose sheets and bound copies of the lithographs included in “Un an à Rome et dans ses environs” (A year in Rome and its surroundings). It is also home to 142 original sketches by Thomas purchased in 1963. A selection of these are on display at the “Antoine Jean-Baptiste Thomas and the People of Rome (1817-1818)” exhibit promoted by Roma Capitale. What where the impressions of a Frenchman visiting a city like Rome in the early 19th century? It was certainly chaotic and boisterous but it was ...

FESTE BAROCCHE “PER INCISO”

May 19th, 2015

A selection of fifty engravings are on exhibit at the Museo di Roma which document Rome as the “Great World Theatre” and home to secular and religious festivals and ceremonies. During the 17th century in particular, the great architects of the time would design elaborate outfitting in the streets, piazzas and churches for such events. The many aspects of this custom had a great influence on the traditional urban image of the Eternal City. This exhibition is part of the “Baroque in Rome. The wonder of the arts” project promoted by ...

December 16th, 2014

A photo exhibit on the ground floor of the Museo di Roma displays images of the capital city taken over a 20-year period (1986-2006), presenting the evolution of Rome’s urban landscape in recent decades. These were the years characterized by great changes resulting from exceptional activities on the part of the people in the Municipality of Rome. Aside from being a tribute to Rome, the exhibit is also an opportunity to begin a reflection upon the trends in contemporary photography in the sphere of its “facies urbana”. Grand Hotel de ...

ROBERT CAPA IN ITALIA 1943 – 1944

October 29th, 2013

The Museo di Roma has brought this very important Robert Capa exhibition into being. The renowned Hungarian photographer is considered by some as the father of photojournalism. Although never a soldier himself, Capa lived most of his life on battlefields capturing five of the world’s major conflicts: the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War, World War II, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the First Indochina War. New exhibit space dedicated specifically to temporary art shows will be used for the occasion. The 78 photographs on display testify to the way Capa’s ...

COMMON PLACES. British landscape artists in Rome between the 18th and 19th centuries

August 20th, 2013

British landscape artists in Rome between the 18th and 19th centuries in the graphic works at the Museo di Roma continues the project begun in 2012 dedicated to French landscape artists. Works by Richard Cooper, Edward Lear, Arthur John Strutt and John Ruskin will be on display. Impressive views of the city and poignant images of the Roman countryside which had captured the imagination of the painters. They had often put themselves through some rather strenuous and even dangerous trips to areas filled with malaria and bandits just so that they could ...

OMBRE E LUCI 1920-1960. Faces of Cinema as seen in the portraits by Manlio Villoresi.

September 11th, 2012

The Museo di Roma is exhibiting approximately ninety photographs of Italian actors dating from 1925 to 1960.These portraits originate from photographer Manlio Villoresi’s over 1500 silver bromide gelatin processed negatives. The exhibit is mainly a collection of portraits of actors and singers. Portraits done by Villoresi in the late 1920’s exemplify the “soft focus effect” so popular back in the day as well as certain techniques like a targeted use of light and a wind-blown hair effect. His later work is less pictorial: the subject is often photographed in close-up ...

LUOGHI COMUNI. French landscape painters of the 18th and 19th centuries in Rome

April 3rd, 2012

Over eighty works of art including engravings and water paintings on loan from the Museo di Roma will be on exhibit at Palazzo Braschi. The exhibit tells the stories of the young French artists who gravitated around the prestigious Académie de France built upon request of King Louis XVI. According to the common practice in use during the 19th century, Rome was a crucial stop in the intellectual formation of any young European of a good family. All works on display are dedicated to Rome and demonstrate the different kinds ...
