OMBRE E LUCI 1920-1960. Faces of Cinema as seen in the portraits by Manlio Villoresi.
The Museo di Roma is exhibiting approximately ninety photographs of Italian actors dating from 1925 to 1960.These portraits originate from photographer Manlio Villoresi’s over 1500 silver bromide gelatin processed negatives. The exhibit is mainly a collection of portraits of actors and singers. Portraits done by Villoresi in the late 1920’s exemplify the “soft focus effect” so popular back in the day as well as certain techniques like a targeted use of light and a wind-blown hair effect. His later work is less pictorial: the subject is often photographed in close-up and represented directly with attention focused upon psychological implications and naturalistic reflections.
