On the occasion of the canonization of Pope Paul VI, announced by Pope Francis for this October, the Capitoline Museums’ earthly rooms are hosting the exhibit entitled “The Popes of the Councils of the Modern Era. Art, History, Religiosity and Culture ” An exhibit revolving around 30 works – rare, precious paintings, sculptures, silver and liturgical textiles- which illustrates some of the popes who were the protagonists of the three councils of the modern era: the Council of Trent in the 16th century, the Vatican Ecumenical Council and Vatican II, between the 19th and 20th centuries. These were all the vehicles of reforms and renewals in the continuity of the Church and resulted in monumental repercussions in the theological-historical and pastoral fields as well as in the world of art. From the second half of the 16th to the 20th centuries, popes have succeeded the throne of Saint Peter and have confirmed three Councils. The fact that they took place in the modern era makes them interpreters of this era, with its “languages”.
