JUSTIN PEYSER. Diaspora … adrift IV
Rome’s Carlo Bilotti Museum is presenting an exhibition of ten sculptures by Justin Peyser that indicate a forced departure with no certain destination in sight – the beginning of a voyage to find and explore courses and channels of communication that are both physical and technological. New York artist Justin Peyser takes on the issues of exile and diaspora, considering them elements that are not only related in the specific terms of intolerances but also in terms of communication phenomena, the circulation of ideas and opportunities of encounter. The sculptures making up this large installation represent mysterious, faceless characters and were created in sheet metal plates roughly welded together whose burn marks were left visible because – in the artist’s own words – “wandering around in this diaspora leaves scars just like their imbalance. In a certain sense it represents being suspended between two nations.”
