Over 180 works on exhibit featuring painting, sculpture, graphic design and photography – some of which have never been exhibited or haven’t been on display for many years – on loan from Rome-based contemporary art collections in a new and idealized interpretation of the city’s artistic culture: a hyper-centric yet multicultural city which, over the decades, has seen diversity and uniqueness take root and not always or exclusively under conflicting circumstances. Chronological details illustrate that the 20th century developed around and between Modernity and Tradition: from Ernesto Nathan, Mayor of Rome from 1907 to 1913 who clearly followed the political philosophy of Mazzini during the complicated period he was the city’s leader to the turbulent decade that saw mass movements and an artistic-cultural revolution which was christened with the name of the year in which it was most overpowering and universally known as 1968.
