CANALETTO 1697-1768
A large-scale retrospective exhibit is being hosted at the Rome’s Palazzo Braschi Museum in Piazza Navona to celebrate Giovanni Antonio Canal (Venice 1697 -1768), better known as Canaletto. His genius for painting resulted in the revolution of the genre of city views (vedute) which had always been considered secondary. Thanks to him, this painting style received the same acknowledgement in his day as historical and portrait paintings. It actually was heightened to such a point that it even became emblematic of the scientific and artistic ideals of The Age of Enlightenment. Among the masterpieces on exhibit, aside from the aforementioned painting on loan from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, there are two outstanding works from the Pinacoteca Gianni e Marella Agnelli in Turin: The Grand Canal from the North towards the Rialto Bridge and The Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Carità – on display for the first time together with the manuscript from the National Library in Lucca which explains the circumstances of the painting’s commission and its creation.
