HIROSHIGE. VISIONI DAL GIAPPONE (VIEWS FROM JAPAN)
Utagawa Hiroshige, one of the most celebrated artists of the Floating World (Ukiyo-e), was a master capable of conducting landscape and nature to the centre of his artistic output and transforming them into authentic protagonists of his work. The exhibit features a selection of about 230 works from prestigious collections on loan from Italy, Japan and the United States, offering spectators the opportunity to admire Nature through Hiroshige’s captivating and refined quality: from his best known series such as One Hundred Views of Edo and Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and his most prized coloured woodblock prints depicting flowers, insects and animals to original designs which have remained intact to this day. The sense of harmony and serenity pervading the artist’s work enthralled the greatest Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in Europe, the first of whom was Vincent Van Gogh who copied the Japanese master’s renowned Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake as an oil painting.
