MEMLING. RINASCIMENTO FIAMMINGO (THE FLEMISH RENAISSANCE)
An ambitious initiative that offers the Italian public an opportunity to view the very first large-scale exhibit dedicated to Hans Memling is being hosted at Rome’s Scuderie del Quirinale. Upon the death of his mentor Rogier van der Weyden, Memler became the most important painter in Bruges during the second half of the 15th century. The city was the financial heart of Flanders at the time as well as the home to the most advanced artistic output of the area. This exhibition examines every aspect of his work: from his monumental altarpieces to his small portable triptychs as well as his famous portraits – a genre in which Memling perfected to set as a backdrop to his landscapes, the style which would have a major influence on many Italian artists during the early 16th century.
