TURNER. OPERE DELLA TATE (WORKS FROM TATE)
A unique collection, expressing the intimate and reserved side of J.M.W. Turner (23 April 1775 ‒ 19 December 1851), donated in its entirety to Great Britain and preserved at Tate Britain in London. This exhibition marks the beginning of a major collaboration between Tate and Chiostro del Bramante. Known today as the ‘Turner Bequest’, many of the works on display come from the artist’s personal studio and were created over the years for his “own pleasure”, to quote art critic John Ruskin’s lovely definition. An aesthetic and visual pleasure that perpetuated memories of Turner’s journeys, emotions and glimpses of landscapes seen during his sojourns abroad. In fact, the artist used to work in the open air during the warmer months and shut himself in his studio during the winter to replicate everything he had seen in real life on canvas.
