HOKUSAI. SULLE ORME DEL MAESTRO (HOKUSAI. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MASTER)
The 200 works on exhibit chronicle the master’s output and compares it to that of other artists who followed in his footsteps and brought new lines, shapes and colour proportions to life within the classical Ukiyo-e genre. Hokusai’s The Great Wave, the first in the series 36 Views of Mount Fuji, brought him universal fame and inspired artists living in Paris during the late 19th century such as Manet, Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh and Monet – all of whom were major exponents of Japonism. The art of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), the universally acknowledged master of Ukiyo-e (which literally means “images of a floating world”), is vast and diverse and his many disciples took it upon themselves to ensure the wide distribution of his work. He was an innovative artist who experimented with many formats and techniques: from ink paintings and coloured paintings on vertical and horizontal rolls to polychromatic woodblocks of all sizes and the more refined Surimono prints used as greeting cards, invitations and calendars for events and literary encounters, tea ceremonies and booklets for the theatre.
