PINTORICCHIO PITTORE DEI BORGIA (THE PAINTER OF THE BORGIAS)
For the very first time the Capitoline Museums are exhibiting the Pintoricchio Madonna – which Vasari claimed was a portrait of Giulia Farnese, the mistress of Pope Alexander VI Borgia – alongside his better known work Baby Jesus of the Hands. This fascinating exhibit displays splendid paintings and tells the stories of late 15th century Roman courtesans. The protagonists include a Pope, the controversial Alexander VI (born Rodrigo Borgia in 1431 and was Pope from 1492 to 1503), a stunningly beautiful and refined lady named Giulia Farnese (1475-1524) who became the Pope’s mistress at a very early age and whose affair was widely rumoured at the time and one of the most brilliant painters of the Italian Renaissance Bernardo di Betto known as Pintoricchio (1454 circa – 1513). Borgia’s papacy was marked by dynastic plots, vicious bickering and intrigue, slander and envy but at the same time supported the arts and called Pintoricchio to Rome, an artist who created one of the most renowned series of painting in the history of art: the frescoes in the Borgia papal apartments in the Vatican.
