The exhibit at Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art explores a period of particularly innovative fervour within Italian artistic and literary culture immediately prior to World War I. The 19th century, known as “the long century”, was coming to a close. And with its death, the enthusiastic mythology of the belle époque with its generation of young artists who took an open position against the established official system of exhibiting died as well. These artists had challenged the conservative and selective criteria that administered participation in exhibits and claimed independence for artistic research and freedom of expression. The exhibit closes with the tabula rasa which the global conflict provoked against all avant-garde aspirations, absorbing the movement’s dynamic outpouring.
