LEONARDO E IL VOLO (DA VINCI AND FLYING)
Flying has been the dream of all mankind and has belonged to our history since the times of Greek mythology and the tale of Daedalus and Icarus. Da Vinci’s manuscript of his “Codex on the Flight of Birds” housed in the Royal Library of Turin is a notebook in which the Renaissance Genius wrote and illustrated his studies of flying. He based these studies upon his observation of birds in flight and developed an authentic science of flying and used his theory to design his flying machines. Da Vinci’s analysis of birds in flight was carried out in a strictly mechanical manner: projects, notes and designs of the physiognomy of birds as well as their resistance to air and currents. The Codex is on display inside a special air-conditioned case that maintains the moisture needed for its conservation and allows spectators to admire it. Touchscreen multimedia devices make it possible for them to virtually “leaf” through the manuscript, “navigate” in high resolution and “read” it thanks to a transcript in Italian and in English.
