THE ANNUNCIATION BY EL GRECO
For the occasion of the exchange project between Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Rome’s Capitoline Museums, the Capitoline Superintendence has chosen to exhibit El Greco’s The Annunciation in the Italian capital. The artist from Crete lived in Spain for the last 40 years of his life and the nickname by which he is universally known is a clear reference to his Greek origins. The Annunciation is a signature work by El Greco that was painted in Toledo. It is also the definitive model that was presented to his clients for the creation of a large-scale painting to be used for a majestic altarpiece (retablo in Spanish) enclosed in a well-structured wooden frame. Painted between 1596 and 1600 for the main altar of the Colegio de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación in Madrid, the Retablo di Doña Maria de Aragon (founder of the school and client) was dismantled in the early 19th century and five of the resulting masterpieces were sent to the Prado Museum while the sixth painting was sent to the Museo Nacional de Rumania de Bucarest.
