WILLIAM KENTRIDGE – TRIUMPHS AND LAMENTS: A PROJECT FOR ROME
This exhibit highlights the apex of a series of artistic and cultural initiatives which linked the city of Rome to the renowned South African artist. Charcoal sketches of the figures created by the artist for the massive walls along the Tiber River that depict with penetrating insight iconography of the art of Ancient Rome, stories from the history of the Church (such as the heart-wrenching Saint Teresa of Avila) as well as moments from our contemporary history represented by the large-scale installation dedicated to the death of Pier Paolo Pasolini, one of Kentridge’s favourite poets and intellectuals. Aside from these works, a portion of which were exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2015, a series of ink drawings and unpublished pastels designed specifically by the artist for the occasion are on display along with a large-scale paper frieze measuring over six metres (also unpublished) that recreates the entire sequence of the monumental figures created by the artist along the embankments of the Tiber.
