L’ETÀ DELL’ANGOSCIA (THE AGE OF ANXIETY)
The Age of Anxiety exhibition on display at Rome’s Musei Capitolini is the fourth appointment of the “I Giorni di Roma” (The Days of Rome) cycle and offers an opportunity to illustrate the great changes that marked the age between the reigns of Emperors Commodus (180-192 A.D.) and Diocletian (284-305 A.D.). The exhibit tells of the widespread spiritual and religious crisis that caused the abandonment of traditional religions within a climate of general anxiety, resulting in the growing acceptance of deities from the Eastern cults such as Isis, Cybele, Mithra, Sabazios and Jesus Christ, of course. The anxiety in question was derived from some very tangible problems: civil wars, financial and economic crises, famine, epidemics (like the ones which took place during the reigns of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and Gallienus) and ceaseless pressure from the barbarians at the Empire’s borders.
