In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp in Auschwitz and the annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Vittoriano Museum Complex in Rome is hosting “The end of the horror. The liberation of the Nazi camps” exhibition in the Sala della Gipsoteca (Plaster casts gallery). Documents (some of which have not been on exhibit until now), newspapers from the time, audio-visual accounts, drawings, maps and photographs recall those tragic days and focus upon the horror revealed to the world of those camps and the trauma their survivors had experienced. A large collection of first-hand accounts (many of which have not been previously shown publicly) help us understand the horror of those death camps, a horror which the survivors could never get out of their minds or hearts – not upon the arrival of their liberators nor in the years that followed.
