GLI ETRUSCHI E IL MEDITERRANEO. LA CITTÀ DI CERVETERI (THE ETRUSCANS AND THE MEDITERRANEAN. THE CITY OF CERVETERI)
This fascinating exhibition hosted in the halls of Rome’s Palazzo delle Esposizioni retraces almost ten centuries of history of Cerveteri: a city sheltered by the sea about 50 kilometres from Rome that became one of the most powerful cities in the Mediterranean. It is no accident that Caere was considered “the most prosperous and populated city of Etruria”, to quote Greek historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus. This city rivalled Rome for importance and influence but was finally dominated by the latter and absorbed by the rising Roman Empire during the 1st century B.C. The great archaeological digs that took place – especially during the 19th century – brought an astounding amount of monuments and objects to light which marvelled the people at the time. These finds are on display in some of the world’s greatest museums, particularly the Louvre Museum and the Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia.
