GIOVANNI PRINI
Giovanni Prini (Genoa 1877 – Rome 1958) was a sculptor, painter and craftsman. He and his wife Orazia Belsito moved from Genoa to Rome in the early 1900s and opened the doors of their home/studio on the Via Nomentana to the younger exponents of the cultural scene in the capital city, friends, intellectuals and fellow artists. The halls of the Gallery that preserve the artist’s most famous works like Gli Amanti (The Lovers) and Le Gemelle Azzariti (The Azzariti Twins) tell the story of the figure and the complex artistic career of one of 20th century Italy’s most important sculptors. The exhibit opens in the Salotto Prini with the aforementioned painting and furniture designed by the artist. There are many portraits of his wife Orazia and works by artists and regular guests at Prini’s home bear witness to his close friendships with Cambellotti (Nude, 1904), Severini (Self-portrait, 1904; The Girl in Blue, 1905), Domenico Baccarini (Giovanni Prini’s Wife, 1906), Mario Sironi (Ballerina, circa 1916). Also on display for the first time is an oil painting by Giacomo Balla (1903).
