LUCAS CRANACH: The other Renaissance (L’altro Rinascimento)
Works by the great German Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach will be on exhibit for the first time in Italy at Rome’s Galleria Borghese. The artist, a friend of Luther’s, was famous at court for his particularly penetrating and innovative portraits. He was very bound to the Flemish school of painting, yet was also influenced by the Italian Renaissance school of the time. The exhibit displays approximately 45 of Cranach’s most significant works. The exposition and catalogue do not follow any chronological order, but is divided into seven sections by style and theme:
The art of the Court; the Power of Women; Feminine Sensuality; The Image of Religion; the Faces of the People; the Presentation of the Artist; Graphic Invention.
