QUANDO ROMA PARLAVA FRANCESE (WHEN ROME SPOKE FRENCH)
This exhibit hosted at Rome’s Napoleonic Museum is an extension of the policy to promote and display material preserved in the archives that are generally hidden from public view. The exhibition is part of a larger project dedicated to the period during which France exercised a great influence on the Eternal City (1798-1799; 1809-1814). There are more exhibits dedicated to this period planned for upcoming years. This particular collection is unique in comparison with other public or private collections. The great amount of preparatory material available offers viewers an extraordinary opportunity to experience a kind of virtual tour of an engraver’s workshop by following the creative process of several works – from preliminary sketches and initial attempts to the final and definitive prints. The fact that many similar works were destroyed during the ensuing Restoration period is probably what makes these illustrations (and their fierce political resonance) so rare.
