CEZANNE E GLI ARTISTI ITALIANI DEL XX SECOLO
This extraordinary exhibit at Rome’s Complesso del Vittoriano presents a direct comparison between the works of Cézanne and those of some of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century. Works on display include those by Umberto Boccioni – who saw the message of the French artist as an essential catalyst towards an urgent need for change – and Giorgio Morandi, whose similarities with Cézanne include his choice to themes. Also on exhibit are works by post-war artists such as Afro, Scialoja, Corpora, Morlotti and Pirandello, all of whom were influenced by the eclectic idiom chosen by Cézanne in his later works. They explored abstract stylemes – known as “abstract-concrete” art. The catalogue was created by Maria Teresa Benedetti and Alain Tapié. Cézanne formed a bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century’s new line of artistic exploration, Cubism.
