Lorenzo Lotto e i tesori artistici di Loreto (Lorenzo Lotto and the artistic treasures of Loreto)
The Museo-Antico Tesoro di Loreto (Museum-Ancient Treasure of Loreto), housed in the hall of the 16th century Palazzo Apostolico di Loreto, adjacent to the Basilica della Santa Casa, came into being as the result of periodic transfers of works of art and artistic objects (mid-19th century) that were also of interest to the Basilica and other nearby areas such as the pharmacy and the halls of the Palazzo Apostolico. Luigi Serra published the first catalogue of the Santa Casa di Loreto in 1919. The museum was officially inaugurated on 8 September 1951 but it was not until many years later, on 15 June 1974, that it was open to the public on an ongoing basis. The renovated museum with new and more spacious rooms was inaugurated on 8 September 1997.
The current exhibition “Lorenzo Lotto and the artistic treasures of Loreto” was organized in view of a novel, more scientific and rational outfitting of the Museo-Antico Tesoro della Santa Casa di Loreto’s collection and to offer this precious legacy of art and faith to a broader and more international public that also visits the halls of the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. The exhibition unwinds along an itinerary of important paintings by Lorenzo Lotto in harmony with the iconography of Loreto followed by works already placed on the altars and other halls of the Basilica and the inestimable relics of the Basilica Treasury which escaped the plundering of Napoleon’s army.
