I PITTORI DEL ’900 E LE CARTE DA GIOCO. LA COLLEZIONE DI PAOLA MASINO (20th CENTURY PAINTERS AND PLAYING CARDS. PAOLA MASINO’S COLLECTION)
Playing cards with 20th century painters: this evocative game is ideally possible thanks to the original collection of playing cards that belonged to Paola Masino (1908-1989) which Alvise Memmo donated to the Museo di Roma. Open to the public for the first time, the collection is on display in the halls located on the ground floor of the Museo di Roma. Masino was an unconventional writer, an extremely erudite intellectual and the companion of Massimo Bontempelli. She was close friends with men and women of letters, musicians and painters from Italy and abroad who loved a game of cards and collected decks of playing cards. This “passion” of hers led her to request of her many artist friends to create painted decks of Neapolitan, French and Tarot cards. She out together a unique collection from 1947 to the 1980s – a demonstration of 20th century pictorial art in which these playing cards, abstracted from their original context, become works of art and a “metaphysical symbols”.
