The pictures taken by Rodrigo Pais restore the sense of profound identity of the city of Rome and its suburbs with the direct and pragmatic style typical of this photo-reporter. In doing so, he maintained the same intensity found in the images captured by great photographers such as: William Klein for his project dedicated to the streets of his hometown entitled “New York 1954-1955”, Bruce Davidson in his “East 100th Street” (a series done from 1966 to1968 that narrates the conditions of a tenement in East Harlem known for its state of deterioration) , Garry Winogrand and his street photography between New York and Los Angeles, Eugène Atget’s portraits of deserted streets and the humanity of Robert Doisneau’s photos of Paris and the Parisian suburbs as well as Vivian Mayer’s shots of a hectic Chicago. Pais doesn’t only bear witness to a historical period in Rome from the viewpoint of its urban development or historical-political context; however, he explores the city’s most subtle textures as well.
