I BELGI. BARBARI E POETI (THE BELGIANS. BARBARIANS AND POETS)
Rome’s MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting I BELGI. BARBARI E POETI (The Belgians. Barbarians and Poets), an exhibit curated by Antonio Nardone who displays the works by major Belgian artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The show offers an overview of Belgian art and culture during this period, its many aspects and iconoclastic, ironic and poetic character. The title of the exhibit is inspired by a passage from “De Bello Gallico” (The Gallic War). Julius Caesar’s account of the Gallic War includes the following observation: Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae (Of all the peoples, the Belgians are the bravest) and the choice of title aims to emphasize the ancient link shared by Belgium and Rome – the intrepid and wild character that knows no conventions nor categorizations which is an integral part of the Belgian spirit and culture.
