ROMA POP CITY 60-67
Over 100 works on exhibit including paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations along with auteur films and documentaries that have been restored with the collaboration of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale (Experimental Cinematography Centre – National Film Library). The main subject of the exhibition is Rome during the early 1960s, transformed and revived through the visual imagery of artists from the so-called School of the Piazza del Popolo. These are the talented artists on display. They have repossessed a city that is transforming and inventing itself rapidly and have converted it into art by means of visual imagery inspired by what defines Rome itself: its open areas, urban elements, road signs, advertisements, monuments as well as nature and the environment. The result is an innovative figurative, iconic and nondescript setting that stretches far beyond commercial and productive standards (we could say “from the product to its art form”) of American Pop Art, delineating boundaries, space and theories.
