OSTKREUZ. THE EXHIBIT OF GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHIC AGENCY
This retrospective exhibit narrates the story of the OSTKREUZ agency founded in 1990 in Paris by a group of photographers from East Germany and now Germany’s most famous agency. There are over 250 photographs on exhibit by 22 photographers featuring works created from immediately after the Fall of the Berlin Wall to the present. In the spring of 1990, seven photographers from Berlin were sitting at a table at the Café du marché in Paris. The Wall had just fallen and Germany was still divided. No one could have imagined the unfolding of future events. The photographers were in the city by request of Mitterrand to participate in an exhibit that had united East Germany’s most prestigious artists including Sibylle Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler. They had the model of Magnum Photos in mind (they were friends with some of its members) and since they were all in Paris together, they decided to bring their own agency into being. They called it Ostkreuz after the metropolitan railway station which connects the eastern part of Berlin with the rest of the city – a way to characterize their work: a departure from the east to finally be able to take their work in any direction.
