HOME BEIRUT SOUNDING THE NEIGHBOURS
The exhibition, curated by Hou Hanru and Giulia Ferracci, is a new chapter of the Interactions across the Mediterranean project. After focusing upon the contemporary art scene in Iran (2014-2015) and Istanbul (2015-2016), we now examine Beirut, a dynamic city which processes the past and acts as a laboratory for the future. There are more than 100 works on display by 36 artists – the expression of an ever-growing, inter-Mediterranean culture. Outfitting for the exhibit has spectators “navigating” the complexity of the city and is split into four sections. Each is conceived as a “home” dedicated to a single aspect of the city’s kaleidoscopic artistic scene: memory (Home for Memory), hospitality (Home for Everyone?), map of the area (Home for Remapping) and joy (Home for Joy). Over the past two decades Beirut has become an example of resilience, dynamism, cultural vivacity and hope. Contemporary art is both witness and generator, even at this time of renewed tension.
