A new and precious piece can now be introduced into the vast and intricate mosaic that tells the story of Ancient Rome: a fragment of Forma Urbis Romae, the ancient plan of the city of Rome commissioned by Emperor Septimus Severus and originally engraved on marble slabs (dated to 203-211 A.D.). It will be on exhibit until 17 March 2016.
The new fragment was found during recent works in Palazzo Maffei Marescotti, a building belonging to the Vatican located on Via della Pigna. This “Vatican” piece makes it possible to have a better understanding of the ancient terrain now known as the Ghetto and Theatre of Marcellus. The Forma Urbis Romae has been an integral part of the Capitoline collections for centuries. The re-composition of historical-architectural conditions is held in the highest regard by both the Capitoline and Vatican Museums.
