The Ukrainian novelist Nikolai Gogol’ defined Rome, the city in which he lived from 1837 to 1846, as “the native land of my soul”. The exhibit features the works of two fellow Ukrainian artists: 17 watercolours by Alla Zarvanytska and 22 paintings on glass by Valentina Vinogradova. These works depict glimpses of Gogol’s intense “Roman life” – a life that is not well-known but essential to his formation as an artist and as a human being. The exhibit hosted at the Casina delle Civette of the Villa Torlonia Museum offers visitors an opportunity to admire the wealth of an artistic perspective of “Gogol’s Eternal City” as proof of the novelist’s words “You fall in love very slowly with Rome, gradually, but for life”.
