Basilé is introducing works from his new series entitled “Pietra Santa” for the very first time at the Macro Museum. This series was created at the quarries in Carrara. As in all of his work, the artist incorporates traces of the Italian artistic tradition into his photography by creating dreamlike and surreal images. Chimerical figures breathe life into the artist’s pictures. Characters suspended from a setting that is almost lunar in nature seem to emerge from enormous white wounds cut into the craggy slopes of the marble quarries. Like Michelangelo, the vocation of the artist seems to be that of liberating the beings imprisoned in this wild stone and situating them in a landscape where sculpture, architecture and painting are integrated in order to accentuate the human form, always at the core of Basilé’s artistic quest, even if transfigured through numerous iconographic references.
