THE ORIENTALISTS. Wonders and Discoveries of 19th century Italian Art
The Chiostro del Bramante is presenting an exhibition of great relevance even today: The Orientalists. Wonders and Discoveries of 19th century Italian Art, 80 carefully selected works that tell of the Orient through paintings of the 19th century. Chronicles of forbidden pleasures, odalisques, harems and Turkish baths – as told by explorers – set imaginations ablaze in the Old-Country at the time. A desire was growing to know more, to discover and understand lands that were not very far away – geographically speaking – but very remote from a standpoint of culture, history and ambiance. Such a spell bewitched many artists and was intensified by their contemporaries who were just as smitten by the Near (and yet remote) East.
