LA SPINA. DALL’AGRO VATICANO A VIA DELLA CONCILIAZIONE (THE SPINE: FROM THE AGRO VATICANO TO THE VIA DELLA CONCILIAZIONE)
The exposition hosted at Rome’s Capitoline Museums offers visitors a journey back in time through the places leading to Saint Peter’s Basilica, narrating the transformations the area has underwent from ancient times up until the 1950 Jubilee which also marks the year that urban planning was completed. The exhibit brings to mind places which no longer exist but have been the protectors of the memory of historical events that have led to today’s configuration of Rome in its dual role of Italy’s capital city and the symbolic centre of Christianity. The exhibit’s leitmotiv is the Spina (“Spine”). It takes on two different meanings: the particular shape of the block in the days of the Renaissance (it resembled a spine) while today the meaning is interpreted as a “foreign body” since the connective tissue of the city has vanished due to centuries of demolition.
