DOMON KEN. JAPAN’S MASTER OF REALISM
The solo exhibit dedicated to one of the most important photographers in the history of modern Japanese photography. There are approximately 150 works on display dating from the 1920s to the 1970s that narrate the artist’s path towards social realism: from his very first shots taken before and during World War II which express a prospective linked to photojournalism and propaganda to a more socially aware style of photography. The exhibit outlines Domon Ken’s artistic output and includes the images remembered as his key works – those documenting the tragedy at Hiroshima. The photographer dedicated his art to this event, which he saw as his calling and his duty as a humanitarian. The exhibit is jointly curated by Rossella Menegazzo, Professor of History of East Asian Art at the University of Milan, and Professor Takeshi Fujimori, Artistic Director of Ken Domon Museum of Photography.
