MATISSE. ARABESQUE
Rome’s Scuderie del Quirinale is presenting an exhibition curated by Ester Coen with a scientific committee made up of John Elderfield, Remi Labrusse and Olivier Berggruen. The goal of the “Matisse. Arabesque” exhibit is to examine the influence that the East had on Matisse’s painting: the Orient – with its artifices, arabesques and colours – suggests broader ranges that are truly mouldable and offers a new scope to his compositions that liberate it from formal boundaries and carry the necessary perspectives and “resemblance” to open a new space made up of vibrant colours and a new idea of decorative art founded on the concept of pure surface. Morocco, the East, Africa and Russia (in their most spiritual essence and as distant as possible from a simply decorative dimension) indicated new patterns of composition to Matisse. Arabesques, geometric outlines and drawings found in the Ottoman world, Byzantine art, the Orthodox universe and the Primitive Art studied at the Louvre were all elements interpreted by Matisse with an extraordinary sense of modernity and through an idiom that was not concerned with the precision of natural forms. The result was sublime.
