GABRIELS AND THE ITALIAN CUTE NYMPHET
The Museo Pietro Canonica at Villa Borghese in Rome is offering a never-before-seen exhibition that compares works by Italian sculptor Gabriels (Paolo Gabrielli) to some of those by Pietro Canonica. These two marvellous artists will be displayed face-to-face for a “reflection” upon the images linked to the pathos of the Nymphet and its gradual decline and decay in today’s world followed by its current incarnation as the modern Cute Nymphet toy (Etant Dunny). Works by Gabriels are reconnected to the “cute” dimension of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara as well as to American Pop Surrealism and Japanese Superflat, although these reconfirm a truly European cultural tradition.
