The exhibit at Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome aims to illustrate to the general public the intense efforts of the State to enrich Italy’s cultural heritage through purchases and recoveries as well as those made by private collectors through bequests and donations. Over the years, the State has continued (anonymously at times and with abundant media coverage at others) to purchase works of art, property and archaeological areas pursuant to the current legislation: registration with the heritage of recovered archaeological goods, exercising pre-emptive rights on sales, purchases at export offices or direct negotiations, donations or the payment of estate or other taxes on goods of historical/artistic value, repossession, reclamation or re-entry to Italy are only some of the many methods used. The exhibit will also shed light upon the contributing factors which influence officials and directors in their choice of purchasing specific works of art.
