LA MISERICORDIA NELL’ARTE (MERCY IN ART)

September 13th, 2016

LA-MISERICORDIA-NELL'ARTE_ENG

The subject of Mercy, the very heart of Christian belief, has been the object of many works of art. Paintings and sculptures or miniatures and engravings, these represent two distinct features: Our Lady of Mercy (or the Blessed Virgin) who gathers Christians under her cloak like a mother who protects, defends and helps her children and the Corporal Acts of Mercy which Christ proclaimed (Gospel of Saint Matthew 25, 35-36) and that every good Christian must perform. Therefore, this exhibit displays several artistic commentaries dedicated to the topic of Mercy and works are subdivided into two sections. The most famous and epitomized work on the subject of Mercy is the painting that Caravaggio created for the Church of the Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples between 1606 and 1607 known as the “Seven Works of Mercy”. Given the delicacy and the importance of the art, the two great masterpieces by Piero della Francesca and Caravaggio are documented through didactical panels.

CARLO SARACENI 1579 -1620. Un Veneziano tra Roma e l’Europa (A Venetian between Rome and Europe)

February 25th, 2014

The National Museum at Rome’s Palazzo di Venezia is hosting the first monographic anthological exhibition dedicated to great Venetian painter Carlo Saraceni. The artist, one of the first and most important followers of Caravaggio, worked intensely for twenty years in the Papal City and had met with much success before returning to his native Venice for a few months in 1620 where he died at the age of forty. Saraceni was a gentleman painter, cultured, wealthy and with a tendency towards the French style – according to several sources – who interpreted ...

CARLO SARACENI

April 30th, 2012

The halls at Rome’s Palazzo Venezia are hosting the first monographic exhibition of the great Venetian artist Carlo Saraceni. He was greatly influenced by Caravaggio with works featuring dramatic contrasts of shadow and light and worked on commission from the Vatican for the most part. His vast artistic output – from his large altarpieces to his small elegant works in copper – are linked to important artistic episodes such as his fresco at the Quirinal Palace’s Sala Regia. They offer a slice of early 17th century Figurative Art in Rome. His paintings are also found in Rome’s ...

ROMA AL TEMPO DI CARAVAGGIO (Rome in Caravaggio’s time)

December 6th, 2011

The splendid halls of Palazzo Venezia are hosting 140 paintings from all over the world – some of which have never been on display in Italy until now – that reconstructs the art scene in Rome at the time of the great Caravaggio. The works in this exhibition were chosen in such a way as to best represent the complex events that shaped and characterized the art scene in Rome in the early 17th century in the broadest and significant manner possible.
