The “Caravaggio. Contarelli Chapel” exhibit will present the results of a new diagnostic project carried out on three paintings: The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, The Calling of Saint Matthew and Saint Matthew and the Angel promoted by the National Committee for the celebration of the 4th centenary of the death of Caravaggio and is a part of a broader research project for the purpose of publishing a book dedicated to the technique used by the master in the paintings found in Rome. The results of the analyses conducted with innovative technology have enriched our knowledge of the painting and compositive technique of the master in an extraordinary manner. Merisi was an artist capable of transposing perspective ideas from the Renaissance repertoire and organize the space of his canvases in a “geometrical” way.
