APOTEOSI. DA UOMINI A DEI. IL MAUSOLEO ADRIANO (APOTHEOSIS. FROM MEN TO GODS. THE MAUSOLEUM OF HADRIAN)
This interesting exhibition intends to present an enriched perspective of the historical significance of Hadrian’s Mausoleum (now known as the Castel Sant’Angelo) beginning with the quality of its architecture. The exhibit opens with the Mausoleum’s foundations and the ceremonial Imperial burial places, telling of the religious–historical origins of the emperor’s deification beginning with hero worship in Greece (Heracles) and Italy (Aeneas and Romulus) to the cults of rulers, the first of which was Alexander the Great. Works on display are of great historical interest such as the Ripacandida Jug, the Amiternum Relief, the Nantes Cameo and the ivory Diptych of Quinto Aurelio Simmaco along with images of deified emperors and maquettes of principal monuments. The exhibit’s itinerary describes the origins and historical evolution of the apotheosis and celestial journey.
