ARAZZERIA PENNESE – LA CONTEMPORANEITÀ DEL BASSO LICCIO (THE ARAZZERIA PENNESE FACTORY – LOW WARP LOOMS TODAY)
The tapestries on exhibit were woven at the workshop of the Lake Penne Regional Natural Reserve, the WWF Italy oasis. The display features some of the large tapestries by Giacomo Balla and Afro in representation of historical tapestry while contemporary production includes two tapestries by each of the following artists: Alberto Di Fabio, Matteo Nasini, Marco Tirelli, Costas Varotsos and Andrea Mastrovito. Founded in 1965 and open until 1998, the Arazzeria Pennese tapestry factory represents the tradition of artisanal excellence in the medieval town of Penne (Province of Pescara). Tapestry factories in Italy and Europe, including those in France and Portugal, work with high warp loom weaving while the workshop in Penne uses four-heddle handcrafted looms and a technique all its own. Weaving low warp tapestries requires a close collaboration with artists during both the initial stage of outlining the cartoon and the choice of colour schemes for the wool, the so-called colour wefts and warps – made by mixing a series of coloured wool threads together to create the tapestry’s picture.
