ETTORE ROESLER FRANZ’S ROME
The series of watercolours, created between 1876 and 1897 portray the areas in Rome that underwent urban and architectural reconstruction commissioned by the Italian Government after 1870 to bring the city into alignment with its new role as capital city. Due to their particular technical standards and the fact that they were painted on paper, these watercolours are difficult to preserve and their prolonged exposure prior to the 1980s has prevented further exhibition on walls. The comparison to be made between the paintings which lead us to the concept of a Vanished Rome and from their picturesque, romantic atmosphere and coeval photographs (some of which are extraordinarily beautiful) offer the public another instrument to explore the Capital and its history.
