RAPAHEL, PARMIGIANINO, BAROCCI. METAPHORS OF THE GAZE
Three titans of Italian art in an unprecedented comparison. Paintings, drawings and prints tell the story of an intense connection involving Raphael, Francesco Mazzola (known as Parmigianino) and Federico Barocci – both of whom were recognized by older sources as being the heirs to the artist born in Urbino. The association of these three artists is being presented at an exhibit hosted in Rome’s Capitolini Museums that illustrates an encounter of different visions: those of ancient artists towards the works of Parmigianino and Barocci and their connection to Raphael, those of the two artists towards the works of Raphael and, ultimately, the gaze of all three of these artists towards spectators (it can be seen in the selected self-portraits on display). Selected paintings were specifically chosen, such as Barocci’s Annunciation and Rest on the Flight to Egypt (on loan from the Vatican Museums), to recall the main themes offered by the graphics.
