The splendid halls of Palazzo Venezia are hosting 140 paintings from all over the world – some of which have never been on display in Italy until now – that reconstructs the art scene in Rome at the time of the great Caravaggio. The works in this exhibition were chosen in such a way as to best represent the complex events that shaped and characterized the art scene in Rome in the early 17^th century in the broadest and significant manner possible. Caravaggio’s painting of Saint Augustine (in Italy for the first time) will also be on display for this extraordinary occasion. The work had disappeared during the mid 19^th century and was recently recovered in a Spanish collection. The fact that it was attributed to Caravaggio unleashed a hard-fought debate.
