ART IN JAPAN 1868 – 1945
This exhibit is dedicated to nihonga painting and focuses upon the evolution of applied arts through a carefully chosen selection of works and objects ranging from the traditional Akemono – typical vertical scrolls of paintings on paper or silk – to the screens that decorated the interior of Japanese homes as well as lacquers, pottery, textiles, kimonos, vases and wood carvings. This display makes it possible to “re-read” the story of the evolution and intertwining of Japanese artistic culture with the main currents of modern Western art. Over 170 works will guide the public through a discovery of Japanese art dating from the historical period in which the East encountered the West: between Japan’s surge towards renewal and the rediscovery of its own pride right up to the sedimentation of modern cultural thought.
