IL MERAVIGLIOSO MONDO DI WAL. SCULTURE FANTASTICHE, ANIMALI MAGICI E DOVE CERCARLI (THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WAL. FANTASY SCULPTURES, MAGICAL ANIMALS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM)
The solo exhibit of Walter Guidobaldi – better known as Wal, one of the most original exponents of the Nuovi-nuovi Italian art movement founded by Renato Barilli in 1980. The intention of the show is to familiarize the public with his artistic universe through 50 sculptures produced by the artist over the past decade: a wonderful world recreated by Wal on display inside the Casina delle Civette museum and its garden. Visitors will catch sight of methodical expedients and cultured references in Wal’s remarkable world open to the public at Casina delle Civette and the museum’s garden. Cherubs were inspired by Goya’s Portrait of Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), the gymnast cherubs were transformed by 18th century French painter Bénigne Gagneraux while the wrestling cherubs were based directly from the classical models. However, Wal’s rendition of these models of reference is in no way meant to be derisive or irreverent à la Duchamp. To the contrary, the artist used it as an opportunity to release a flood of creativity – agile mental processes and blazing dexterity fill his work with enigmas and inquiries that deal with the very meaning of existence.
