GIORGIO MORANDI. 1890-1964
More than 150 works including paintings and etchings are displayed along a path of critical reading based upon the observations of art historians Roberto Longhi and Cesare Brandi, who fully understood their value. The exhibit traces the 74 years of Giorgio Morandi’s life and his intense artistic output (paintings and etchings) up to his death in 1964 following a three-month break from painting but with many ideas yet to develop. He could be defined as the painter of silence and photographs of him reveal his art in part: his gaze is patient, shy, concentrated and immersed in thoughts that are as streamlined as the subjects of his still lifes – which are always the same yet never banal. If his paintings are silent, his etchings seem to disclose the background of his artistic quest. Similarities with Rembrandt, Goya and Piranesi as well as with Picasso and the avant-garde artists.
