DISEGNI SMISURATI DEL ‘900 ITALIANO (THE COUNTLESS SKETCHES OF 20th CENTURY ITALIAN ART)
Limitless if compared to the sketches, preparatory studies, drawings and cardboard – these can be as large as the final result or just a portion of the work the artist intended to create. Whether the artist has a painting, a fresco painting, a glass window, a mosaic or a even a tapestry in mind, cardboard is a necessary element in the process of the completion of any artistic work by the artist personally or by those skilled workers who are assigned to do so. It should come as no surprise that these large sheets elaborated here in Italy during the early 20th century, a period linked to the recovery of ancient and traditional decorative techniques, have survived the test of time. The artist, who had spent hours on smaller studies, found the definitive lines and shapes of their works on these large cardboard models. Also on display is an oil painted sketch, all of what remains of a large painting entitled “The Wedding”, a humble and austere wedding banquet transfigured into a holy supper representing the wedding between the artist and Anticolan model Candida Toppi who died of the Spanish flu in 1918.
