L’ARTE DEL COMANDO. L’EREDITÀ DI AUGUSTO (THE ART OF COMMAND. THE LEGACY OF AUGUSTUS)
The 12 sections of the exhibition at Rome’s Ara Pacis Museum are split up by themes and different historical periods which illustrate how emperors like Charlemagne, Frederick II, Charles V and Napoleon (to name a few) reinterpreted Augustus’ “art of command” throughout history –with formulas which were very similar or even identical at times. Augustus possessed the ability to commission a series of works that organized Rome’s Trojan origins while arranging those of his own family according to a system in such a way that his ascent to power would appear not only legitimate but predestined to the eyes of his contemporaries. He commissioned works like the Aeneid, the symbolic furnishings of his Forum and Ara Pacis, converting propaganda into an art form and entrusting his very image to the creations of the finest minds of his time.
